Gay rights laws in America have evolved to allow — but in some cases ban — rights for gay, lesbian and transgender people on a range of issues, including marriage, hospital visitation, adoption, housing, employment and school bullying. The handling of gay rights issues vary by state and follow trends by region
2 hours ago President Barack Obama’s most glaring vulnerabilities this election cycle are laid bare in the new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, in which Americans say the incumbent commander in chief has either made no impact on pocketbook issues – or even made them worse. More respondents said Obama made worse the budget deficit (47 percent), health care (43 percent), and the partisan divide in politics (39 percent) than those who said the president had improved – or at least made no difference – upon them during his first term in office. Those are numbers that help explain the Romney campaign’s almost singular focus on the economy in prosecuting his case against Obama. “What these polls are telling us is that we have a close race, and the number one issue on people's mind is the economy,” said an adviser to the former Massachusetts governor. “If you look at the president's performance on that No. 1 issue, he's getting failing grades across the board.” There are issues on which the president has an advantage – Americans view Obama as having improved the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. auto industry, and protections for the middle class. And more respondents (32 percent) in the NBC/WSJ poll said they’re quite or extremely confident that the Democrat’s policies would improve the economy than the 19 percent who said the same for his Republican rival. But Obama faces serious and stubborn frustration toward his handling of the economy. The number of Americans who said they expect the economy to improve over the next year dipped slightly, and 50 percent of poll-takers said that last month’s jobs report – which showed the economy added 115,000 jobs in April – was no reason for optimism. Romney’s challenge, though, lies in convincing voters that he would represent an improvement over Obama. The new poll data show that the private sector resume that Romney frequently cites on the campaign trail is an asset, especially as it relates to how voters expect the Bain Capital co-founder to turn around the economy and close the budget deficit. It also explains why the Obama campaign has launched a full-fledged attack on Romney’s business experience, in hopes of diminishing his advantage – for now – versus the president on those pocketbook issues. “It depends how credible of a messenger Romney really is. Do people think that his work at Bain made life better for the average people?” said former Texas Rep. Martin Frost, a veteran Democratic campaigner. “The public probably doesn't know too much about Romney's record in the private sector, but my bet is they'll know a whole lot more by the end of the election.” Thirty-five percent of Americans said Romney’s private sector career at Bain Capital is a major advantage in improving job creation; another 24 percent said it’s a minor advantage. A combined 59 percent said Romney’s background was an advantage in working to reduce the federal budget deficit.

A domestic worker in the western Singapore town of Choa Chu Kang pleaded guilty in court today to mixing her menstrual blood into a cup of coffee she had prepared for her employer. The incident reportedly occurred last year; no motive for the crime was given. The 24-year-old Indonesian woman who goes by the name Jumiah had been working as a maid for a year prior to the coffee "mischief." She now faces a maximum sentence of one year in prison, as well as a large fine. Her employer, meanwhile, faces a lifetime of making his own coffee.

This Blind Item was generally thought to be about Matthew McConaughey and Camilla Alves. With the photo from Cannes yesterday, I began to think it was true. "What started out as misguided fun has turned into a really precarious situation for this one celebrity couple. She is a sometime model and sometime reality star. He is pretty much an A list movie actor. They have been together for awhile. When they first got together the woman was recovering from a long time c*ke habit which she used to stay thin while modeling. She also used her*in but never told our actor. He has always been open to pot and mushrooms but shied away from harder dr*gs because he relied on his body to get him roles other actors could not get. Body first, acting talent second. Although he has done dram and comedy and action, he is pretty much a one note actor. After a momentous occasion in their life, the couple took some time off to vacation together. They ran into an old friend of the woman and one thing led to another and all three did some c*ke together. Since that point about six months ago, our actor and his significant other have been doing c*ke everyday. He has stopped working out and is focused more on c*ke everyday than any other part of his life. The couple have passed off their child/ren to nannies which they never did before and party every night, all night. Supposedly the woman has also even got back into her*in. Still has not told our actor though."

This one is obviously worth posting because of the whole marriage issue and predictions by conservatives that it is now off the table for Obama. That does not appear to be the case. Tuesday, May 22 SurveyUSA [Romney +1] Romney - 45% Obama - 44% In an election for President of the United States today, 05/22/12, North Carolina's 15 critical electoral college votes are a toss-up, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WRAL-TV Raleigh. Previous SurveyUSA polling in 2012 has been of registered voters. In this first look at likely voters, it's Mitt Romney 45%, Barack Obama 44,% within the survey's many possible sources of error, and therefore effectively even. Romney leads by 21 points among North Carolina's white voters. Obama leads by 76 points among North Carolina's black voters, who are estimated here at 20% of the electorate. A larger, engergized black turnout helps Obama; a smaller, depressed black turnout helps Romney. Independents break 4:3 for Romney. Moderates break 5:4 for Obama. Romney has an ever-so-slight advantage in greater Charlotte; Obama has an ever-so-slight advantage in Southern and Coastal Carolina. The candidates are even in greater Greensboro and greater Raleigh. Romney does well among middle-income voters and the less educated. Romney leads by 19 points among evangelicals and by 65 points among Conservatives. Three times as many Democrats cross-over to vote for Romney as Republicans who cross-over to vote for Obama. On Marriage: 36% in NC say a candidate's position on same-sex marriage is very important; of them, twice as many vote for Romney as vote for Obama. 24% say a candidate's position on marriage is not a factor in how they vote; among them, twice as many vote for Obama as vote for Romney.
